Our adventure to Pittsburgh

We started our morning with rain at 7AM…arrived into sunny Pittsburgh 10 hours later.

Construction, detours, unmarked streets, no bathrooms in the 700 gas stations we stopped at…garmin took the lead RV into a cul-de-sac at the bottom of a hill while the car trailer was still hooked up…ummmm, I guess I know where the time flew by. Don’t worry, Ed and Ahmad were safe and were escorted into Pittsburgh by the local police. “Thank you!” to a wonderful welcome by attendees. Steve from radKIDS’s to show what you “Can do” and will be joining us again in Columbus.

Point State Park is beautiful! If you get a chance sometime, stop and see it. We had a late night, but woke up bright eyed and bushy tailed at 6AM and are on our way to Columbus! We are excited to get back on the bikes and to meet some local riders and the citizens of Columbus! We are excited to go to the State that was the 1^st State to pass the Adam Walsh Act.

The Friday, Kick-off was amazing!!! If you missed it let me tell you a little about it. Larry Moss created these life size cyclist out of balloons – so cool! The Empire Stateman performed and there are no words to describe their talent. Metlife passed out finger print kits and even Snoopy stopped by to say “hi” to the kids. Wegmans supplied us with some tasty treats before the ceremony began. Friends, family, dignitaries gather to show their support…tears of sadness and tears of hope were shed.

From the ceremonies Ed and Ahmad joined by team Excellus biked around Rochester stopping to talk with people about the SPC initiatives. From there we had to go back to packing the RV and let’s just say…we never finished…only day 2 and it already looks like we are living out of it, hahaha.

Yesterday we were up bright and early for the 10AM send off at Frontier Field. Ed and Ahmad raved about the ride and about our New York State Trooper and the Monroe and Eire County Sheriff’s department…once we got near the venue, they were escorted in my Amherst police.

Doug and Mary Lyall did a wonderful job in Buffalo along with help from Lisa Cooke and Latanja Morsell. We can’t forget our friends from Sam’s Club and Home Depot who also came out to volunteer! Great job!!!!

Congressman Chris Lee is ready to help! We won’t forget! J

Another productive day!

A special thanks to Lisa Sweet Cooke and Alex Rivazfar for putting in so many hours today …no boxes would have been checked off if it weren’t for you!

Kathy Phelp’s at Dixon Schwabl is typing, typing, typing away at press releases…Kevin Gricius is make change after change after change on the website site and all the SPC Ambassadors and City Stop Volunteers are working around the clock to make certain everything is in place to make this a successful campaign. And what is everyone’s goal?! NOT ONE MORE CHILD!!!

Right now I am waiting for Ahmad to call…his brother should be in town any minute and we are going to park the RV…This past Saturday, Ahmad’s brother, sister-in-law and son flew from Florida to Houston, Texas to pick up the Laura Recovery Center RV and drive it all the way to Rochester. THANK YOU!!!!

Whoo hoo! Ahmad’s daughters Chloe and Alex stopped in the office today to help. They will be back tomorrow along with Lisa…the RV will be in town, Ed will be in town…soooooooo much to do, but collectively we will get it done!

So much to think about...nutrition, signs of fatigue, bike maintenance, proper gear...BTW, Ed and Ahmad don't forget their might be some snow in the Rockies...the list goes on and on and on...thank goodness for Scott and Kyle!

Kinna is Scott and Kim's dog...she is so sweet. She is a cross between the shops mascot and concierge. If only she knew how to ride a bike.

Just before their 50 mile ride the weather is beautiful...sunny, warm and breezy...about 2 hours into the ride and they hit a torrential downpour. Guess that is why they call it training.

Straight from the National State Legislators Conference, Ed arrives in Rochester to train with Ahmad and meet with Scott Page, Owner of Full Moon Vista and the man behind the ride route, Kyle. With just a little over 3 weeks Scott and Kyle are making sure we have dotted our “i’s” and crossed our “t’s”, thank you guys!

If you are a cyclist in the Rochester, NY area and want to help Ed and Ahmad train for their ride across America, they will be leaving Full Moon Vista (180 St. Paul St., Rochester) at 5PM, Wednesday, July 28^th. This is a non-supported ride and they will be riding 50 miles keeping a 15mph pace. Hope you can join them!

Surviving Parent Coalition members Mary Kozakiewicz, Jayann Sepich, Ed Smart, Linda Walker and Karen Foster are in Kentucky at the National Conference of State Legislators.
